Nathan and mentor Godfrey Tomanek

Raised in Niantic, Connecticut, Nathan Bayreuther was first employed at age 13 at the First Congregational Church of New London as the substitute Director of Music beginning in 1994, eventually hired for that position in 1999.  While serving in that capacity, Nathan organized many joint choral performances and music concerts, introducing a successful Lenten organ concert series.  Named "Director of choice" by the New London Clergy Association, he served as music director for the 2002 and 2003 city-wide interfaith September 11th memorial services.

In October of 2005, Nathan became the Director of Music Ministry at the First Congregational Church of Madison.  His most notable projects have included overseeing the $16,000 restoration of the church's historic 1875 Steinway grand piano, re-establishing the popular Lenten organ recitals, and helping to raise money through music concerts for Darfur awareness and for a new ambulance at the Mount Selinda Hospital in Zimbabwe.  He also serves as Director for the church's Music at the Meetinghouse concert series.

Nathan studied piano with Dr. Judith Mack of Oakdale and organ with Mr. Godfrey Tomanek of Old Lyme.  A recipient of several scholarships, he was awarded the Colleague Certification from the American Guild of Organists in 2004.  He has also served on the Executive Boards of the New London and New Haven County Chapters of the AGO.  He continues to play numerous organ recitals around the state and is scheduled to play a solo organ concert at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City next summer.

While classically trained in both piano and organ, his passion for jazz led to the founding of the Nathan Bayreuther Jazz Combo in 1998, a trio which continues to perform across the state with drummer Chris Kent and bassist Mike Harten.  When not involved with music projects, Nathan can be found sailing on the waters of Long Island Sound.  He currently lives with his wife, Elizabeth, in Wallingford.
